Alejandro Faya Rodríguez

Competition · Investment · Regulation · Administrative · Strategic Litigation

Alejandro is a lawyer with a Master's degree from Oxford University and postgraduate studies in the Netherlands, Austria, and the United States. His participation has been key in building the mexican competition system. He was the principal drafter of the current Federal Law on Economic Competition of 2014 and participated in the review of the 2025 reforms. For more than eight years, he served as Commissioner of the Comisión Federal de Competencia Económioca (COFECE, 2016–2025), where he analyzed and resolved all types of proceedings—mergers and acquisitions, regulatory opinions, market studies, bidding processes, and investigations into monopolistic practices, essential inputs, and barriers to competition. He was the chief negotiator for the competition chapter of the USMCA and led the most significant litigation before specialized courts and the Suprema Corte de Justicia de la Nación, which generated landmark precedents.

He previously served as Director General of Foreign Investment and Head of the Productivity Unit at the Secretaría de Economía, overseeing federal regulations on the matter and serving as chief negotiator for international investment treaties with countries on every continent. As a consultant for UNCTAD (United Nations), he prepared benchmark studies on international investment law and trained developing countries in treaty negotiation and arbitration administration. In the private sector, he worked at firms such as Camil Abogados, Dentons López Velarde, and Woss & Partners.

He has been writing columns on his areas of expertise for over a decade —previously in Reforma and El Economista and now in El Universal— , is the author of books and articles in national and international academic journals, and is a regular lecturer.
